Excellent piece. Love this line: "The tighter your focus, the easier it is to grow" because I have found it to be so true for me, and you are right that it helps them hear and understand your voice. Saying "no" when it's outside your targeted area is a discipline, and it's an important one.
Thanks so much for stopping by Jill. Focus really does create clarity, for us and for the people we’re trying to reach. Saying “no” can feel tough, but it’s actually where the growth begins. Appreciate your thoughtful response.
George, I think I need to work on this brand piece, especially since my Substack has a name that doesn't convey specifics (Wild Arisings). Thanks for the tips.
George, this is a terrific piece, I really enjoyed it — especially your emphasis on clarity. The reminder that readers decide in seconds whether to stay or leave struck a chord. I’ve been working on refining my own About page and Welcome post, and your framework helped me see where I could simplify and focus more on the reader. Many thanks for sharing your experience in such a clear and practical way.
I’m so glad this resonated with you, Will. It really is amazing how quickly readers make that decision. Simplifying for clarity is one of those small shifts that makes a big difference. Sounds like you’re on the right track with your About page and Welcome post!
Solid Substack advice George. I noticed in your published Notes that you're all about the human connection. There's a hidden no-brainer action that I don't see much discussed, but is how I've picked up hundreds of subscribers. Comment on the work of other authors. Not only does it boost our author eco-system in all the right ways, it's wonderful writing practice to enter a conversation that somebody else has started, investigate your own perspective in response, and find a way to articulate it. Conversation among is sunlight on the seed of our ideas.
Thanks for stopping by and giving this piece a look over, Rick. Commenting really is one of the most overlooked growth strategies. It builds genuine connection while sharpening our own voice at the same time. I love how you framed it as sunlight for ideas, that’s such a powerful image.
